Best for: Mid-week brunch with a kick!
When Miguel told me that Benjy’s did brunch 7 days a week it was a no brainer. Finally a restaurant here that is as committed to the brunch cause as I am! The waiters even had brunch-themed t-shirts on – 10 points to Gryffindor.
Now, the menu veers more to the ‘unch’ side of brunch, which is never a plus for me, but the ‘Large’ plates section was all ‘br’ plates and if they come in a large size, who am I to complain? Both Miguel and I spent some time switching back and forth between choices, but finally pulled ourselves together. As we’ve seen so far, Texas seems to have a problem with poached eggs (or lack thereof). Maybe they don’t even know what they are – heck, I should probably educate ‘em. Anyways, I’m getting used to my scrambled or omelette substitutes…

The order:
- Lox & Avocado Toast – scrambled egg whites, house cured salmon, cucumber-squash salad, (brioche replaced with dairy-free bread upon request)
- Braised Beef Carnitas Stack – pineapple salsa, black beans, crispy corn tortillas, sunny side up egg
- White Peach Mimosa
- Coffee
I can’t stress how excellent (egg-cellent? Sorry…) the salmon and avo toast was. Oh my god. It was just on a different level. Yes, I prefer poached eggs with my avo toast, but this dish made up for it through sheer originality. The cucumber and squash salad gave it an extra fresh kick that was delicious! Miguel was practically in a state of nirvana over his beef carnitas, and I had to steal a sip of his $4 peach mimosa. FOUR DOLLARS. Girls? Where the heck are you!?
Also, anywhere that has waiters wear dedicated brunch t-shirts gets my vote. 'Nuff said.

To try next time:
- Benjy’s French Toast – brioche, vanilla whipped cream, pomegranate chutney
- Quinoa Veggie Burger – crispy sweet potato, sweet chilli sauce, arugula, red onion
